Be a Fool and Spark Your Creativity

Blake and Annie, two amazing 60-ish women with women I hung out for a week in the south of France, helped me with this zesty list. You must know that the circumstances that prompted this list included taking scenic drives looking at Cathar sites, eating lingering lunches in the springtime sun, drinking bottles of sparkling wine, and long conversations about love, life and zestiness around the fire.

Annie and Blake are qualified to help me with this list not just because they are great women, but because they live large and are great models for foolish and authentic living. Annie, from Vermont is in France visiting Blake to learn French before her second tour in the Peace Corps, this time in Morocco.

Blake is a leadership and negotiation corporate trainer in Europe who is developing her deep and powerful writing life. Blake has managed to score year-round house sitting gigs in the south of France for two years, so this report comes from an incredible mansion on the Canal du Midi.

Here’s the list we brainstormed together. To read more about being a creative fool, check out this week’s Impulses.

1. Get into nature – climb a tree, roll down a grassy hill.
2. Expose your belly and let it move and dance and talk.
3. Blake says have a lover 10-15 years younger but I’m trying to recover from that.
4. Annie says shed the corporate handcuffs and suggests the Peace Corps as a way.
5. Freefall is a great mode to live in.
6. Change your life when you recognize your prison (your house, your mortgage, your job, your relationship).
7. Try to speak a foreign language and don’t care about being correct.
8. Sleep overnight in a weird and unlikely locale.
9. Do something that feels adventurous (go make a list now of at least five things that spell adventure for you).
10. Know what stimulates you and experience it often.
